Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription medicine used to treat frequent heartburn and acid reflux. It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.
Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Your doctor will give you a short list of your health conditions, most of which are listed below.
The typical starting dose of Nexium is 40 mg once a day, which can be increased to 60 mg once a day depending on your doctor's instructions. You should only take it for 7 days.
Nexium is not an acid-suppressing drug. It will not help you to get the relief you need for heartburn or acid regurgitation. It will not cure your condition. Nexium is not a cure for heartburn and acid reflux.
Take this medicine exactly as it is prescribed for you. Follow the directions on the packaging, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain how to take it. Take this medicine at about the same time each day, so that the drug can work at the same time.
Drink plenty of water while you take this medicine. You can take it with or without food, but some people prefer to take it at a fixed time.
Do not take this medicine more often than directed or for a longer period of time than directed or for a longer period of time than your doctor prescribes. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
Your doctor may want to change your dose of Nexium from now on to not take Nexium more than once a day, unless your doctor specifies that you must take it twice a day.
Do not give this medicine to others, even if they have the same symptoms as you. If you have a known reaction to this medicine, contact your doctor.
You may experience stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, headache, and/or heartburn if you take too much Nexium. These symptoms may indicate that you need a new drug. If you have heartburn or acid reflux, taking Nexium may help relieve these symptoms.
If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, talk to your doctor. They may adjust the dosage or prescribe another medicine to help you better manage your condition. Do not stop taking Nexium without talking to your doctor.
Some side effects of Nexium may include:
Although most side effects are mild, there are some more serious side effects that may require immediate medical attention.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
Nexium may cause weight gain by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. This may lead to an increase in food cravings, which may also cause weight gain. If you gain weight while taking Nexium, talk to your doctor about ways to manage your weight.

In the United States, AstraZeneca, the drug maker, said on Thursday it expects global annual sales of Nexium to reach $1.1 billion in the year to June 2023, up from $1.1 billion in 2012. The drugmaker is in talks with the European Medicines Agency about a potential deal with AstraZeneca to sell the drug. The AstraZeneca deal would be similar to AstraZeneca's deal with Pfizer, which had previously rejected AstraZeneca's request to sell its PPI Nexium. Pfizer, which last year said it was not interested in the U. S. patent on Nexium, would receive a license from AstraZeneca to sell the drug. In 2012, Pfizer agreed to sell its drug for $2.65 billion, or about $3.5 billion. It will be generic copies of its own. The deal could be announced in the third quarter of this year.
AstraZeneca had previously said that it expected a generic launch of the drug in the United States. The company said the launch would be in late-stage development. The company had planned for a launch in the U. in the second quarter of the year, when the first generic version of Nexium would hit the market.
AstraZeneca will continue to market the drug and will continue to market its own version. It is not expected to make a full year's sales of the drug, which is used to treat more conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers. The drug is also used to treat heart disease and certain chronic diseases, and may also be used to treat conditions that have impaired long-term healing, such as those that cause or suggest a cancer.
The U. Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic version of Nexium, which is one of the most widely used generic medications. AstraZeneca said that the company expects to start selling its generic drug in the U. in the third quarter of the year, which will be its biggest seller. Sales of Nexium for the first nine months of 2012 were $1.1 billion.
The drugmaker said it expected sales of the generic drug to exceed $2 billion in 2012. AstraZeneca, which was considering the drug, has said that its plan for its generic version would be to launch in the U. in the first half of 2012. The first-half of the year would see generic competition from its own company, which was previously the only manufacturer that would market Nexium. The new generic drug, which has a similar mechanism of action to that of the older, cheaper brand, could be the first of its kind. AstraZeneca also expects to launch its generic product in the second half of 2012. The generic product would be the same version of Nexium as the older version.
AstraZeneca did not comment on the drug's U. marketing, but said that its U. sales for the first nine months of 2012 were $1.1 billion. The company's U.
The second-quarter peak earnings per share of $1.02 per share were $1.06, or about $0.04 per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast a $1.02 billion annual earnings growth, excluding a small charge for the stock. The shares held by AstraZeneca were up about 6 percent in the quarter. The stock closed down 1.9 percent in the quarter, while the stock was up 1.5 percent in the quarter.
AstraZeneca said it expects to raise its U. patent for Nexium by a total of $1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2012, including $1.1 billion for the U. patent, from its earlier acquisition of Pfizer. AstraZeneca also plans to market its generic drug. Pfizer's U. patent for Nexium expired in June 2011, giving the company the exclusive right to sell its version of the drug. AstraZeneca has not disclosed the terms of the agreement.
AstraZeneca's U. The patent expired in May 2012 and was challenged by competitors. AstraZeneca has also filed a petition with the U. Food and Drug Administration to get a generic version of Nexium approved by the FDA. The FDA is currently evaluating the matter.
